Interview with Skyler Samuels

By • Filed in: Interviews, Skyler Samuels

Originally this was an interview with both actresses Sklyler Samuels and Alyssa Diaz, but I am just going to post Skyler answers. To read the whole interview click here.

Two actresses from North Hollywood and Toluca Lake are among several local actors starring in the new ABC Family series The Nine Lives of Chloe King. Skyler Samuels, who plays the title character, lives in Toluca Lake; Alyssa Diaz, who plays the badass Mai warrior Jasmine, was born and raised in North Hollywood.

PATCH: Which elementary school featured your debut performance?
SKYLER SAMUELS: I’m really passionate about school. I’m looking forward to applying to college and going to law school. I love books and I love class and I love learning, so pro-education is my thing. I’m kind of a big nerd. I’m an L.A. local and I go to a full-time college prep school here in Los Angeles. So I’m finishing up my junior year, I’ll be a senior in the fall so I do homework, mostly on the weekends.

PATCH: What is your favorite book?
SAMUELS: Oh yes, my favorite book is If I Stay by Gayle Foreman. It’s just an amazing young adult novel, and I just ordered the sequel to it. It just came out a few months ago so I can’t wait to read it. That’s on my summer list when the show is done.

PATCH: What physical preparation did you go through for your roles on the show?
SAMUELS: A lot. The physical preparation was really grueling at first but it’s really paid off and I had no idea how much I had learned until I was applying these things. Before we came back for episodic, I was doing boxing, pilates, running and circuit training with the stunt coordinator and learning fights. I couldn’t throw a punch, a kick. I had trouble running all before the pilot. Then everything got amped up when we came back. At first it was like I was dying. There were so many training sessions where like 400 jumps later on the jump rope, I was like I can’t do it anymore. He’s like, trust me, one day this is going to come in handy. Sure enough, there are days I find myself hopping from building to building or kicking bad guys or punching villains in the face and all of a sudden all those things have made sense. Now I’m proud to say I’ve gone through superhero training 101 successfully.

PATCH: You must be well practiced in wirework and parkour then.
SAMUELS: We’ve worked with some martial artists and stuntmen who are familiar with that, so they’ve done a little bit and they’ve showed me the basics of the basics. There was one episode where I ran off a pillar which I’m very impressed but it’s really not that difficult. Meanwhile, the guy who taught me how to do it did four back flips and all this fancy stuff. I was like, ‘Okay, I’m not quite there yet but I’m working on it.”

PATCH: If you could each have one of your character’s powers, which would you want?
SAMUELS: Oh goodness, I would probably steal the super speed because I could get more done in a day. I would just run everywhere and I would be super efficient. The super hearing is pretty cool too. I love that Chloe has the ability to eavesdrop and listen in. The super hearing power is probably one of the most important as the season goes on because she’s really used it to get herself out of trouble in really interesting ways.

Q & A with Benjamin Stone

By • Filed in: Benjamin Stone, Interviews

Here is a really nice article for you to get to know Benjamin Stone (Alek from “The Nine Lives of Chloe King”) much better. :)

Benjamin Stone plays Alek Petrov in ABC Family’s new series “The Nine Lives of Chloe King“. In this Q & A conference call with the star, he talks about how he got the role, the stunts he performs for the show and what he’s enjoying most about working on the show.

Since Alek is a descendant of the Mai also, what makes Chloe different from him in regards to their abilities?

B. Stone Chloe is the ”Uniter,” so she not only has the basic power of every Mai, the claws, super hearing, agility, and night vision, but she also is an empath, which means she experiences directly what a person is feeling on an emotional level. And also she has nine lives, which is pretty awesome, whereas I have one life, like a schmuck.

From Alek’s perspective, can you kind of describe the relationship he has with Chloe?

B. Stone Yes. His relationship first started as being kind of a mentor. He is also excited that he has found and reunites with his people, but also the fact that he has found another female Mai. Through protecting her and mentoring her he has come to really find something different in her compared to other people because she won’t accept fully being a Mai and because she’s the Uniter as well she is constantly going back to her human friends and everything, which he finds kind of strange. Because of that, it kind of gives him more respect for her, and he ends up caring about her more, and eventually falling in love with her.

Anyway, what’s it like to work with your co-star? It seems like she’s a lot of fun to be with.

B. Stone Yes. Skyler only just turned seventeen, so she’s still really young, but she is way beyond her years in terms of experience. She’s really, really good and she’s always positive, even if she is on set for sixteen hours a day. She obviously works most out of all of us because she is the main character and she is pretty much in every scene. She is great fun and she’s got great parents. We always have a lot of fun and she is very serious when she is on set in terms of getting everything done and working really hard. She has a photographic memory as well. She remembers her lines. She always has a really long section and within a second she knows them. Yes, she’s great. She’s really good fun.

It seems like there are more romantic vibes now between Alek and Chloe? Any comments on that?
B. Stone (…) But definitely in terms of Chloe, from the get-go he’s slowly developing feelings for her and then exponentially developing feelings for her within every episode.

Is Chloe going to start noticing Alek more or is there is anything in that way in their future?

B. Stone I can say that it definitely gets more complicated for her and it’s not quite as simple as “Oh, Brian’s really sweet and Alek’s a jerk.” It definitely gets more complicated and she starts to see different sides of Alek. She also changes as a person because she is embracing being Mai and also growing up. She has never even really dealt with boys before, so she has a lot of decisions to make and they’re not quite as easy as you think.

I have just highlighted some questions.. to read the whole interview click here.
